Oral surgery refers to any procedure or treatment such as cosmetic, restorative or orthodontic that might require surgical intervention. Any procedure that might be highly invasive requires the expertise of maxillofacial or oral surgeons in order to fix issues related to your teeth, mouth, gums and jaw. Due to the highly invasive nature of these treatments, most require the use of anesthesia. Bone grafting and teeth extractions are a few examples of the surgical procedures we offer here at the office. For your comfort, we offer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide for pain control. We want to make sure you feel comfortable during your procedure.
Bone grafting is one of the most common procedures that oral surgeons take care of. Most of the time, a bone graft is required as part of the preparation before undergoing other types of treatment. For example, a patient that requires dental implants, but has a very weak and thin jawbone, will require bone grafts so that the jaw can hold the implants.
The procedure itself helps the bone structure strengthen the jaw structure. It might also be needed when there has been a trauma to the jaw or bone tissue has been lost due to disease. When there is not enough bone tissue to support your teeth or dental implants, bone grafts will be needed.
Many of your teeth can be easily removed, when a dentist recommends teeth extractions a simple extraction might be needed. This is because our teeth are held in place by our gums and roots, however, they can easily be extracted. However when the tooth is growing at an awkward angle, has become impacted, or requires too much space to grow out, it might need a surgical extraction. A simple X-ray will determine what kind of extraction you require, but often times a simple extraction might turn into a surgical one if the roots are too large, or if the tooth breaks and might be needed to be taken out in pieces.
